My Starting Point

I had taken the IELTS twice and scored Band 6.5 in Writing both times. I knew the content was fine — my issue was structure and vocabulary range. A friend recommended IELTS VAULT and it changed everything.

Background

I was preparing for a Canadian PR application that required Band 7.5 overall with no band below 7.0. Writing was my weakest section by far.

The Three Things I Fixed

1. Essay Structure

Before, I would just write whatever came to mind. After studying at IELTS VAULT I learned the exact four-paragraph structure:

  • Introduction — paraphrase the question + state your opinion
  • Body 1 — your strongest argument with a real example
  • Body 2 — a second argument or counterpoint
  • Conclusion — restate your position, no new ideas
The Golden Rule

Every body paragraph needs exactly four things: a clear point, an explanation, a real-world example, and a link back to the question. This is called the PEEL method.

2. Linking Words

I was overusing however and moreover. My teacher showed me a wider range:

  • To add: Furthermore, In addition, What is more
  • To contrast: Nevertheless, On the other hand, Despite this
  • To conclude: All things considered, In light of this
Common Mistake

Do not start every sentence with a linking word. Examiners penalise mechanical, overused cohesive devices. Use them purposefully, not automatically.

3. Vocabulary Precision

Instead of writing “people think”, I started writing “a significant proportion of the population believe”. Small changes, big difference.

Weak Word Strong Alternative
people individuals, the public, citizens
good beneficial, advantageous, constructive
bad detrimental, harmful, counterproductive
think argue, contend, maintain
show demonstrate, illustrate, reveal

The Result

Third attempt: Band 8.0 in Writing. I also scored Band 7.5 overall, which was enough for my Canadian PR application.

The biggest lesson: the examiner is not judging your opinion — they are judging how well you express it.

Final Advice

Practice writing one complete essay every day for two weeks. Time yourself strictly at 40 minutes. The improvement you see in two weeks will surprise you.
